Travis is my 20-year old son. He lived here in Southern California until he was 15-years old, then he went to live with my then-boyfriend/now-husband, Tom. He lived in Texas with Tom until he was 17, and then he came back to CA.
He has been working as a shoe store manager recently. He's been doing great. But he says there are two things driving him out of California: The high cost of living, and the people.
The problem with the people in Southern California is that they aren't very nice. Most people have come from somewhere else. They come with attitudes, probably because of what they see on T.V. about California. People are generally ruder here than anywhere else in the country, except for maybe New York. I haven't been to New York, but this is what I hear.
When I would drive to Houston to see Tom, I would notice the difference in people as I got out of California. People are much nicer else where.
But I've lived here all my life (49 years) and I can be an asshole, too. Well, I'm an attorney so I guess it goes without saying that I'm an asshole, too. I can tolerate people here because I'm used to it. I can see why Travis wants to move away. He's 20, he's really nice and funny and cute, and there are all these assholes around. He doesn't understand it.
He met this guy ("hundreds of years ago") on World of Warcraft who lives in Louisiana, and one of the guy's roommates is moving out. So Travis is going to move there by January to take over that empty bedroom. The cost of rent is 1/3 of what he is paying here, and includes all utilities.
I know that his sisters are sad that he is leaving, but I think, all in all, it will be a good experience for him. He is going to go to college while he's there, he says.
