And, in two months, I've watched quite a few movies. I'm averaging one per week and have really been enjoying them.
I started at the beginning, but am not keeping to any strict order. Here's a list of movies I've watched so far:
The Broadway Melody, 1930
Cimarron, 1932
Grand Hotel, 1933
It Happened One Night, 1935
Mutiny on the Bounty, 1936
The Great Zeigfeld, 1937
The Life of Emile Zola, 1938
You Can't Take It With You, 1939
Casablanca, 1944
All About Eve, 1951
An American in Paris, 1952
From Here to Eternity, 1954
My favorites from this list? Casablanca for sure (Humphrey Bogart is amazing). All About Eve (Bette Davis and Gary Merrill are incredible together). And I just adored It Happened One Night with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. There's a scene where they're sharing a room and Clark Gable's character hangs a blanket between them to offer her privacy to change. She's undressing and he's laying in bed on the other side of the blanket blowing smoke rings in the dark... Wow. Just... wow.
These movies have really piqued my interest in seeing other old movies. I had to pause to watch A Streetcar Named Desire (and holy crap, why didn't anybody tell me Marlon Brando was so freaking hot!?). And last week I had to watch Juno, which was just great.
Hubs and I'll watch No Country for Old Men this weekend. It was a compromise. It's a movie he wants to see and one I can cross off my list. We're good like that.
If you've never taken the time to watch an old classic, you don't know what you're missing. Go out and rent one immediately. You'll thank me for it later. And be sure to watch with subtitles. Just a little tip from me to you.
You're welcome.
